NSTAR was founded in 1999, when the Commonwealth Energy System and the BEC Energy merged. The headquarters, of the provider of natural gas and retail electricity to more than a million customers in Boston and Massachusetts, is located in Westwood. The company also distributes gas to 300,000 customers, in over 50 communities approximately. NSTAR announced in 2010 October, that the company would merge with the Northeast utilities and henceforth would retain the latter's name. This merger was seen through in the year 2012 and so now, NSTAR is an operating company under Northeast Utilities.
