While the White House is globally famous as the official residence of the first family of America, the history of this fabulous place dates way back to 1791 when George Washington chose the site for the White House to be built. A competition for the design was held and Irish born James Hoban won it. President Washington and his wife moved in to the house in the year 1800 although it was only partially completed. After fire was set to it during the war of 1812, James Hoban was hired to rebuild it. Afterward a major renovation was started by President Roosevelt in 1902. Half a century later another renovation took place beginning in 1952. Today there are 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and 6 levels in the place.
