Prior to that it was known as the Federated Department Stores, Inc. it was founded years ago in 1929 through the combination of Abraham & Straus of Brooklyn, Filene's of Boston, F&R Lazarus & Co. of Columbus, OH, and Bloomingdale's of New York. All of them were individually strong and prominent retailers who came together to form an ever stronger unit. Their strength and success is well displayed in the fact that they had a sales figure of $27.7 billion in the fiscal year of 2012.
