Eckerd Drugs were one of the oldest drug store chains in America. The chain was started in 1898 by J Milton Eckerd and Z Tatoon. It was a prosperous and expanding business. At the peak of its success the business had 2,800 stores in 23 states and was considered the fourth largest drug store chain in America. Its headquarters were in Warwick, Rhodes Island. In 2004 CVS bought partial shares. Rite Aid acquired CVS shares and Brooks Pharmacy and announced that it is going to run the stores under its own name, thus a 109 years banner has retired in 2007.
